Sheffield United linked with surprise move for former Real Madrid striker: Wise choice?

Premier League newcomers Sheffield United are interested in signing former Premier League hitman Emmanuel Adebayor, it has been reported.

On Friday, Adebayor parted ways with Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir by mutual consent. He is currently a free agent and is on the radar of Sheffield United, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

Apart from the Blades, Premier League sides West Ham United, Watford and Scottish champions Celtic are also believed to be monitoring the striker from close quarters and it will be interesting to see where his future lies.

Sheffield United finished second in the Championship last season and earned a well-deserved promotion to the top flight. However, they do need to bring reinforcements to beef up the quality of their arsenal for the next season.

Emmanuel Adebayor: Profile

Adebayor spent his youth at OC Agaza and Metz and eventually went on to represent the senior side of the latter. Spells at Monaco and Arsenal followed before he switched to Manchester City in the summer of 2009

However, he was far from convincing while he was on the books of the Citizens and was shipped out on loan to Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, with the latter signing him permanently before the start of the 2012-13 season.

Subsequently, he moved to Crystal Palace in the January transfer window of 2016 but was released at the end of the 2016-17 campaign. After a hiatus of six months, he signed for Istanbul Basaksehir in January 2017.

The Togo international scored 3 goals and bagged 2 assists in 19 appearances for the Turkish Super Lig club last season and after a spell of eighteen months, he has stated his desire to make another move.

Will he be a good signing for Sheffield United?

Chris Wilder’s side need a proven player up front and Adebayor certainly fits the criteria in that regard. He is a canny poacher inside the box and has the required physicality, although he has lost the whatever speed he had which will restrict him to being mostly a target man.

The 35-year-old is good at holding the ball and knows exactly where the goal is. Besides, he links up well with his teammates in the final third, is an astute passer of the ball and is still decent in the air.

However, there is no denying that he is well past his prime and only a shadow of his former self. Besides, he has had plenty of disciplinary issues in the past and that could turn out to be a concern for Wilder.

The club has to assess this particular transfer in a much more detailed manner and sort out their priorities. He will come with loads of experience and the ability to score a handful of goals but he cannot be a Plan A or Plan B as of now and United should scout for other options before making a decision late on in the window.
