Everton have £24.8m bid turned down for Serie A winger: Why they should make a renewed attempt

Everton have been investing big over the last few seasons, buying quality young players, and also have a promising manager in Marco Silva. The Toffees have a foundation for something big and they could challenge for a European spot in the years to come.

Now, the Premier League side are interested in another young player, Roma’s Cengiz Under. Everton have reportedly made a £24.8 million bid for the Turkish winger, which has been rejected by the Italian team.

The 21-year-old joined the Italian club from Turkish club Başakşehir in 2017 for a fee of €13.4 million.

Everton aren’t the only ones who are interested in signing the winger as London clubs Tottenham and Arsenal were interested in signing him.

Under made 33 appearances for Roma in the 2018-19 season, scoring 6 goals and 8 assists. In his 62 appearances for Roma, Under has scored 14 goals in all competitions and become an important player for the Serie A side. The right-sided winger’s contract with his current club ends in 2022.

The talented winger has made 18 appearances for the Turkish national team since debuting in 2016 and scored 5 goals for the national team.

Should Everton return with a better offer for Under?

Under was brought in to replace Mohamed Salah in the Roma team after the Egyptian’s departure to Liverpool, but he is not a player who is completely similar to Salah in his playing style.

The young Turkish international is a good crosser of the ball from the right side of attack, moving the ball over to his left to put in menacing balls into the box. He has shown great composure for a player of his age and makes the right choices in the final third.

The left-footed player usually prefers playing on the right, either drifting inwards to affect play or staying wide and supporting the full-back on his runs. Under is a quick player but he isn’t one that can run rings around the defence with his dribbling ability, but his crossing makes up for those deficiencies which is why Everton should buy him.

Everton have used Theo Walcott and Richarlison out on the right side but Under could offer something different as he is a left-footed player who likes to drift inside from the right, while his young age makes him a phenomenal asset for any team. Silva does not yet have his front four sorted and someone like Under can bring in the required zeal and freshness which can make the likes of Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin tick over the course of the season.
