Barcelona linked with a transfer for rival star: A wise addition to the squad?

FC Barcelona have been linked with Atletico Madrid full-back Filipe Luis, who will become a free agent come July.

According to a report from Goal, the Catalan club have turned their attention towards the Brazilian left-back as a backup for Jordi Alba.

The 33-year-old has expressed his desire to renew with Atleti despite offers from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Flamengo and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, it could all change if an offer from Barcelona arrives in the summer. Luis managed to feature in 32 appearances across all competitions for Atletico Madrid, scoring twice and assisting thrice for his teammates.

Filipe Luis to Camp Nou: A strange move

The Brazilian is a complete package in the full-back role with his versatility both in offensive and defensive phases of the game, but his age remains an issue.

The 33-year-old Brazilian excels at a lot of things – from his technique to his passing ability, all being top notch. He managed an average of 83.6% successful passes last season, and his work rate on the pitch is incredible considering he is 33.

Luis’ tackling and interceptions make him a viable addition to any team out there. He averaged 2.4 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per game producing a defensive master class on most occasions during the recently concluded season.

Simeone has used the 33-year old’s strengths, and that’s something that Barcelona might not utilise considering the completely contrasting playing styles of the two teams.

The Brazilian will turn 34 before the next season kicks-off in August, and although it does sound like a good move from an economic point of view, it could limit the game time for the younger players from La Masia.

The Atletico full-back could bring experience and quality alongside him, and will be happy to accept a secondary role from the bench, but this decision raises concerns over the Barcelona board’s plan to build for the future and give the youngsters a chance.

Players like Marc Cucurella and Juan Miranda could leave the club seeing their reduced game time if this move happens in the summer which raises one big question: Are Barcelona moving away from their policy of trusting the youth who have always been an integral part of their club?
