Newly promoted Premier League side Aston Villa have been quite busy ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League season having signed three players already, which includes a £22 million club-record move for Wesley Moraes.
The Villans secured promotion after winning the play-off final where they defeated Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
Dean Smith’s side will need to continue with their strengthening if they are to give themselves the best chance to stave off relegation from the Premier League next season, and it seems that they have targetted a young, promising centre-back to offer more stability at the back.
Villa have been linked with a move for Adam Webster, who currently plays for Championship side Bristol City, having moved to the club from Ipswich Town at the beginning of the 2018-19 season.
Bristol Live are reporting that Villa as well as fellow Premier League teams, Newcastle United, Everton, and Leicester City, are interested in signing Webster.
The Robins reportedly want £30 million for the centre-back, who has three years remaining on his current contract.
Adam Webster – Profile
Webster was part of the Bristol City team that finished 8th in Championship, four points adrift of a place in the playoff semi-finals.
The centre-back played 47 times in all competitions for Bristol City, scoring thrice, and averaging 2.1 interceptions a game in the Championship.
Webster was also a fluent passer of the ball from the back, averaging 58.6 passes a game.
Is Webster worth the fuss?
Webster has grown to become an impressive centre-back, and was one of the best in the 2018-19 Championship season.
He was named the Bristol City Player of the Year, and was an important figure throughout the season, featuring in almost every game for the Robins.
The 24-year-old centre-back is good in the air, and wins most aerial balls thanks to his 6’3″ frame, while he also likes to bring the ball out of defence to play a part in the build-up.
Webster does not get fazed by opposition attackers and deals with situations in a calm manner. He is a player that is similar to Leicester City’s England centre-back Harry Maguire.
It would be a huge gamble to sign a player from the Championship for £30 million, but if Villa can bring down the transfer fees by £5-10 million, they could have a good deal on a player who still has his prime years ahead of him.
