3 forwards Southampton should target to achieve a higher finish next season – Opinion

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl did a good job of keeping the Saints in the Premier League after he was appointed as manager in December 2018, a time when it looked like the English club may suffer relegation from top-flight football.

The Austrian guided Southampton to a 16th place finish in the league, but to get back to the stability that the Saints managed a couple of years ago, they will need to spend a bit of money.

One area where the Saints need to strengthen is their attack, as the club’s strikers failed miserably in the 2018-19 season.

In fact, the top scorer for Southampton in the 2018-19 season was Nathan Redmond with 9 goals, while Danny Ings, on loan from Liverpool, scored 8 goals in all competitions.

The Saints have to invest wisely in signing their next striker and here are 3 strikers they should target:

Salomón Rondón

Salomón Rondón had a good season on-loan at Newcastle United in the 2018-19 Premier League season, linking up well with Ayoze Pérez, with the pair scoring 25 goals between them for the Magpies.

The Venezuelan, who is currently contracted with West Bromwich Albion, is set to leave the club with the club’s technical director Luke Dowling confirming that the 29-year-old will leave the Championship club.

Rondon will add experience and goals to the Southampton team, and is a player who could link up well with the likes of Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse.

West Ham United, Newcastle United, and Fenerbahce are interested in the £16.5 million striker.

Che Adams

The Saints have been tracking young striker Che Adams for a while and even put in a transfer bid of £14 million for the Birmingham striker as per The Sun.

Adams was in fantastic form for the Championship side in the 2018-19 side, scoring 22 goals and 4 assists in the season.

The 22-year-old striker could be a very good signing for the Saints as he is young, a potent goalscorer, and also has potential to get better.

Birmingham reportedly want £16 million for the English striker which would be an identical fee to what West Brom want for Salomón Rondón.

Dwight Gayle

Another player who has Premier League experience and had a fantastic season in the Championship is Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle.

The 29-year-old was on loan at West Bromwich Albion for the 2018-19 season in the Championship where he scored 24 goals in all competitions, which was the fourth highest in the Championship for that season.

The Magpies may let go of the striker who they value at £20 million.
