3 strikers Newcastle United should target if they sell this forward for £20m – Opinion

Newcastle United are planning to sell Dwight Gayle this summer, but have put a price tag of £20 million on the forward.

Stoke City are interested in signing the Magpies centre-forward, but are facing competition from West Brom (the club where Gayle spent last season on loan) as per the Sun, cited by HITC.

Gayle managed 24 goals and eight assists in 41 appearances in all competitions for the Baggies this past season.

The former Crystal Palace forward helped West Brom to the playoffs, but they fell short against rivals Aston Villa. According to the Evening Standard, Newcastle will sell him for £20 million.

The 28-year-old has returned to the Newcastle camp following his one-year loan in the Championship and is likely to be shipped out in the summer.

Let’s look at the three possible replacements for the English International in case he leaves St. James’ Park in the summer transfer window.

Salomon Rondon

Rondon enjoyed a good season with Newcastle United, and there have been reports saying the club might go back for him should Rafa Benitez sign a new deal at St James Park.

The Venezuelan enjoyed an outstanding season with Newcastle, managing 12 goals and 7 assists in 33 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 29-year-old was also awarded the 2018/19 Newcastle United player of the year award following his excellent season, one where he was involved in 47% of the Magpies Premier League goals last term.

From being a fan favourite at St. James’ Park to his compatibility with the Benitez’s system, Rondon ranks high on the Magpies transfer list for their striker options next season.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Mitrovic is another name that springs to mind when one thinks about quality strikers available in the transfer market.

The Serbian forward was involved in 14 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions and was a constant threat in the final third last season.

The former Newcastle striker is keen on staying in the Premier League after a good season personally.

Mitrovic individually accounted for 32% of Fulham’s goals and finished the season as their top scorer. The 24-year-old who is known for his aerial prowess on the pitch and considering he has come a long way since being a hot-headed forward under Steve McClaren, perhaps the Magpies should eye a reunion?

Duvan Zapata

The Colombian striker is a hot property on the transfer market following his impressive performances with Serie A club Atlanta in the Italian top flight.

The 28-year-old plundered 28 goals and 8 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions last term.

Zapata, who is on a loan from Sampdoria, also worked with Benitez during their time at Napoli.
