Everton showed a bit of progress under Marco Silva last season, as the Merseyside club improved their points tally from 49 (in the 2017-18 season) to 54 points, and finished 8th in the Premier League table.
It took a bit of time for the Toffees to implement Silva’s style, and towards the second half of the season, Everton looked like a team with a game plan.
Everton have already confirmed the permanent signing of Andre Gomes, and could spend more money this summer.
There will also be some good free agents in the transfer market, and let’s look at the three free agents Everton should target.
Danny Welbeck
The Arsenal attacker will leave the club after an injury-ravaged season. The English International would be a decent addition to Everton, considering Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin didn’t set the stage on fire in terms of scoring goals.
Welbeck needs to stay fit, though, if he is to fulfil his potential. Now 28, Welbeck’s best season in terms of goal-return was with Manchester United in the 2013-14 campaign where he mustered nine goals in 25 appearances.
The 28-year old can also feature on the wings, so that might come in handy for Silva. If he keeps himself fit and is given regular playing time, he could prove to be a good signing.
Shinji Okazaki
The Japanese International was a key figure at the King Power Stadium, and played a vital role in Leicester City’s 2015/16 run to the Premier League title.
The 33-year-old is versatile and can play on the flanks, as a second striker or a lone-man up front. His composure and tenacity would be pretty useful additions to Everton.
Okazaki has been linked with a return to Japan, with Vissel Kobe being the interested club, so Everton will have to move fast when his contract expires next month, or on Monday.
Gary Cahill
Everton will be left short in the centre-back department with the departures of their captain Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams, while Kurt Zouma will return to Chelsea.
Cahill sounds like a decent option for the Toffees seeing they will have to sign at least two new centre-backs in the summer, and will require funds to facilitate reinforcements in other areas of the pitch as well.
The 33-year-old has good Premier League experience, and could be a key figure in the dressing room. Though Cahill has lost a bit of pace, he can still put his body on the line and would add more calmness at the back, something Everton lacked at times last season.
Firstly none of these players fits the profile of players Silva/Brands are targeting, which is mainly those under 25.
Even not considering that, Welbeck is terribly injury prone, Okazaki is already 33 and no better that the strikers we already have. And why would we sign 33 year old Cahill when we just let go Phil Jagielka who’s similar in age/capability??
