West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini is looking to add some quality players to his side in the summer transfer window, and one player he’s linked with is 22-year-old Uruguayan striker Maxi Gomez, who plays with Celta Vigo.
A report by Football.london suggests that Gomez could be playing in the Premier League next season if West Ham meet Celta’s release clause for the Uruguayan, which stands at about £40 million but Celta could settle for a lesser fee.
The January transfer window saw West Ham United striker Marko Arnautović linked with a move to a Chinese Super League club. That move didn’t materialise and the Austrian stayed at the Hammers till the end of the season.
The Austrian may move from the Hammers in the summer transfer window, while another striker, Andy Carroll, could be released, while West Ham may be willing to listen to offers for Javier Hernandez.
According to the bookies, the Hammers are the clear favourites now to sign the Uruguayan in the summer, who was previously linked with a move to Barcelona and Liverpool.
What will Gomez add to West Ham United?
A strong player with the physicality to match, Gomez is a player who thrives in and around the penalty box.
The 22-year-old has scored 13 goals in the league for Celta while also registering 5 assists for the Spanish club. In his first season at the club in the 2017-18 season, Gomez scored 17 goals for Celta in 36 appearances.
Gomez is physically strong, but what differentiates from the rest is his clever movement in and around the box. This kind of movement cannot be taught and comes naturally to some of the best strikers in the world.
A fox in the box, with ample pace to beat defenders, Gomez would do well if he gets good service, which he could get from the likes of Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini at West Ham United.
Gomez has been compared with compatriot Luis Suarez, and if the 22-year-old follows in the same path as the Barcelona ace, his name will be sung in the West Ham stands for years to come.
