Opinion: Crystal Palace and West Ham among clubs who should target wantaway Algerian midfielder

Sporting Gijon midfielder Mehdi Abeid could be on his way out of the club this summer; it has been claimed.

According to L’Equipe, Mehdi Abeid is set to leave Sporting Gijon this summer after turning down a contract extension at the club. He will, thus, see out his contract till the end of next month and a move to the Premier League could be on the horizon.

In this article, we will talk about three Premier League clubs who should make a move for Abeid this summer.

West Ham United

West Ham will be in need of midfield reinforcements this summer following an injury-laden 2018/19 campaign. The likes of Jack Wilshere, Samir Nasri and Manuel Lanzini together failed to muster even 700 minutes of game-time and the addition of Abeid, in that regard, will offer Manuel Pellegrini with an additional option at his disposal.

Abeid also has previous exposure in the Premier League, which could make it easier for him to settle into life at his new club.

His technical prowess and all-round quality in midfield are sure to add new life to the West Ham side as they aim to have a more uniform and settled season next time around.

Watford

Watford could certainly use some midfield reinforcements as well, having struggled with injuries to key players like Tom Cleverly and Domingos Quina. As a result, the Hornets appeared overreliant on the services of the midfield duo of Etienne Capoue and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Abeid, therefore, will provide solid cover for both of these midfielders. The Algerian international is also an aggressive midfielder, which tunes in well with Javi Gracia’s tactical philosophy at Watford. He has averaged two tackles per game this season.

In additional, Abeid likes to drive forward with the ball and deliver key passes in the final third – making him an ideal alternative to someone like Doucoure.

Crystal Palace

Perhaps the most logical destination for the Algerian international, the addition of Abeid will be a welcome one for Crystal Palace.

The Eagles arguably have the most shallow midfield department, with James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic and Chiekhou Kouyate being the only reliable options. Hence, Abeid is a viable option for Roy Hodgson’s men as they aim to finish in the top half of the table next season.

Abeid’s work-ethic and concentration would make him a tailor-made fit for Palace’s rather one-dimensional game under Hodgson. And given the fact that he will be available for free this summer, Abeid will an exciting signing for Crystal Palace.
