Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson has completed his one-year loan at Derby County, and reports indicate Southampton want to move in for the attacker.
According to The Daily Star, the 22-year-old has informed the Reds he wants to quit Anfield this summer and has sparked a frenzy for his signature.
Several Premier League clubs — Southampton, Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Crystal Palace — have been linked with Wales International.
Wilson impressed with his performances in a Derby shirt as he helped the Rams reach the playoff final before their lost against Aston Villa.
Wilson under Ralph Hasenhuttl: An exciting option
Hasenhuttl usually sets up his team in a 4-4-2 formation and shares the same philosophy as the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The Austrian expects his team to play a high tempo game with his players sprinting around applying a good high press on the opposition.
Wilson is a versatile player who predominantly features in the number 10 role and possesses the ability to play on either wing or in an attacking midfield role. The Welshmen can quickly adapt to Southampton’s style of play seeing his background.
Hasenhuttl’s system tends to make his wide players move inside for the fullbacks to overlap. Wilson syncs perfectly in here as he likes to cut inside on his left foot to look for the shot or the killer pass. Additionally, he can play in a more deeper role in midfield.
Wilson also has a bit of pace to burn. So he would be a big threat on the break as not only can he take on players, but can instigate moves with his wide range of passing.
The attacker managed 1.3 key passes a game for Derby in the Championship, and would offer a bit more creativity to the Southampton attack under Hasenhuttl. In terms of similarity, he can do what Emil Forsberg did for Hasenhuttl at Leipzig.
The 22-year-old has his price touted at a £25m which seems a bit expensive for a player who has played the majority of his games in the Championship, but that’s the kind of risk the Saints have to take in order to build for the future.
