Liverpool have done very well in the transfer market over the last few seasons, signing quality players, while making a good profit by selling a few. It seems that Jurgen Klopp will splash the cash once again in the summer in an attempt to win the elusive Premier League, which they fell short by a single point in the recently concluded season. The Reds have now been linked with a former player of theirs, AC Milan’s Suso, who was a part of the Merseyside team between 2010 and 2014.
The Spaniard came through the Liverpool academy, having signed for them at the age of 17 in 2010 and went on to make his senior debut two years later. After a loan spell with Spanish side Almeria, and one appearance for Liverpool, he moved to AC Milan after the expiry of his contract.
He has impressed for the Italian club over the last few years, becoming a key player in the team and making the right winger position his own. The left-footed player scored 8 goals for Milan in all competitions and provided 10 assists, this season. A vital component in the Italian club’s team, Suso could be available for £33 million, which is his release clause. Atletico Madrid are keen on signing the Spanish player, while Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could rival Liverpool in a bid to sign him.
Is this a wise move for all parties?
Suso would be a good player for Klopp and Liverpool but the Spaniard may not be afforded first-team football as he plays in the same position as Mohamed Salah. He can play behind the striker, but Klopp has rarely played with two central midfielders and one attacking midfielder. Liverpool already have another left-footed, right-winger in Xherdan Shaqiri, so signing Suso does not make sense unless they sell Shaqiri or move Suso to a central position.
The Spanish winger is quick, skilful and can pick teammates with intricate passes, while also having the skill to shoot from distance. Suso is a good dribbler and crosser of the ball and likes to cut inside while playing on the right and impacting the game from central areas.
His work-rate may not be what Klopp requires from his players, but that is one trait of a footballer that can be changed especially under the guidance of someone like the Liverpool manager who is known to get the best out of his players.
