Leeds United missed out on promotion to the Premier League when they bowed out of the Championship semi-finals, losing against Derby County.
The Whites were magnificent in the first half of the season, but tailed off and fell out of the automatic promotion places by the end of the season.
However, the Leeds fans will have something to cheer about as manager Marcelo Bielsa has agreed to another year at the helm of the club as he will have another crack at reaching the top-flight of English football.
And they could start their journey by adding a few qualities players to their team in the summer transfer window, which could begin with the signing of Southampton striker Sam Gallagher, who is reportedly on sale, as per Football Insider.
Gallagher’s contract with the Premier League club expires two years from now in 2021.
Sam Gallagher – Factfile
The 23-year-old striker joined the Saints in 2012 and made his debut the next year, but he hasn’t been able to cement a place in Southampton’s first team lineup.
Gallagher has been on loan to Championship sides for three consecutive seasons as he played for Milton Keynes Dons, Blackburn Rovers, and Birmingham City between 2015 and 2018.
In the recently concluded season, Gallagher stayed at Southampton, but had very few chances as he played just 6 times in the season, all of which were from the bench, not scoring in the entire season. But he did impress in his last two loan spells at Blackburn and Birmingham, scoring 19 goals in total.
What will Gallagher offer Leeds?
A tall and lanky forward, Gallagher can be a menace for defenders in the air, while he is deceptively quick despite his 6’4″ frame.
The 23-year-old primarily plays as a centre-forward, but has the ability to play out wide on either side.
Gallagher is a neat finisher inside the box, but has been effective from just outside the box as well, scoring goals from distance. The English striker could be a useful player for Leeds as he can be a handful on his day and also has prior experience in the Championship.
Leeds’ two main strikers, Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford scored 25 goals between themselves, but teams need more than two strikers for a tough league like the Championship which is why signing a player like Gallagher could be key for Bielsa’s side.
The Whites will need more depth next season, and considering teams are have gotten more used to their style under Bielsa, Gallagher could offer something different up top.
