Salomon Rondon has hinted he wants to stay at Newcastle United beyond this season.
The Venezuelan forward revealed he is happy at Tyneside shortly after Newcastle’s win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
“I’m happy here but you never know what happens in football.
“I’m on loan – so we will see what happens in the future,” Rondon was quoted as saying by Chronicle Live.
Rondon’s loan spell is until the end of the season, and Newcastle should retain his services.
Newcastle United have been one of the most inconsistent teams in the league this season. Only bottom club Huddersfield Town have scored fewer goals than the Magpies so far, and that is a worrying sign for Rafael Benitez in the long run.
While it goes without saying that the Tyneside outfit have struggled to create enough chances this season.
After Aleksandar Mitrovic’s departure last summer, Newcastle needed someone who could lead the line on his own, and Rondon was signed on loan. The South American has scored seven goals in the league – making him the club’s top scorer this season.
Much like Mitrovic, Rondon is known for his physical attributes, which allows him to get involved in physical duels with defenders while his impressive 1.89m figure also gives him an advantage in aerial challenges.
The forward has won 4.7 headed duels, which is indicative of his aerial prowess as well as his commitment – qualities that are ideally suited to Benitez’s pragmatic tactical setup at Newcastle.
Though the Venezuelan may lack the technical quality and isn’t the most clinical of forwards – indicated by the 2.5 shots he has taken on an average per game — his ability to make the most out of crosses and long balls means he is always a reliable figure up top just when you think there’s a good chance he will be isolated against teams.
With more attacking players, Rondon’s goal-return will improve. Considering he is already used to the tactics at Newcastle United, and is still only 29, the club should sign Rondon permanently come the summer.
