Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to rival Chelsea for the services of £50m-rated Callum Wilson – as reported by Birmingham Mail. The Premier League new boys are keen to sign a new attacker, who can provide competition for Raul Jimenez, with the Bournemouth striker believed to be one of the leading targets.
Callum Wilson: A smart choice by Nuno Espirito Santo?
Although Wilson was recognised as a prolific scorer ever since Bournemouth’s promotion to the top flight, the 26-year-old has performed at a whole new level this season, scoring nine goals in 20 matches while providing six assists, which means he is having his best season yet in the top-flight.
Wilson’s prolific form in front of goal also earned him a call-up to the English national team during November of last year and although there has been a slight dip in his productivity in recent matches, Wilson has definitely been one of the best performing strikers in the league this season.
However, with the Cherries often struggling with inconsistency and failing to push for a number eight spot, a move away from Dean Court beckons and Wolverhampton Wanderers, in that regard, are an appealing suitor for the 26-year-old.
Wilson, much like Wolves’ number nine Jimenez, is an offensive predator, who likes to roam in the final third and make precise runs forward to trouble the opposition defence. He is a clever striker, boasting raw pace that allows him to run in behind the defence – something the Mexican international lacks in his game.
At the same time, Wilson is also a proactive attacker, who can create chances for his teammates. As a matter of fact, he has averaged(1.3 per game) more key passes than Jimenez(1) this season, which could certainly add more creative essence to the Wolves attack.
Although Wilson may not be as hard-working as Jimenez, who often tends to do his defensive duties even as a striker, the Bournemouth forward certainly has the strength and aggression to thrive in the Premier League in the long run and thus, an ideal candidate for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
As for Wolves, themselves, they have often appeared overreliant on the services of their number nine. And Wilson’s addition, in that regard, will provide some much-needed competition in the attacking department, which has also struggled in terms of depth, at times this season.
But Bournemouth have slapped a fee in the region of £50m for their star striker and Chelsea’s apparent interest in him will surely make it hard for the Premier League new boys to compete all the way for the striker if the Blues indeed make a firm bid.
