Tottenham Hotspur eyeing £20m transfer for midfield marvel: Just what they need

Tottenham Hotspur will look to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot for a fee of £20 million, it has been reported.

Time is running out for Tottenham Hotspur in the transfer market as there is less than a week remaining before the January transfer window closes.

According to the Sun, Tottenham could make a move for Rabiot who last played for PSG in mid-December.

PSG have already signed Leandro Paredes from for a fee of €40m, according to the Guardian.

Considering the French side have their replacement for Rabiot, we believe the coast is now clear for Spurs to make a bid for Rabiot who is out of favour at PSG.

Rabiot to Spurs – Some much-needed midfield quality

Mousa Dembele’s departure has left a hole in the Spurs squad and Mauricio Pochettino needs to address it as soon as possible as the Belgian was a key player for the Lilywhites.

Rabiot is a pretty similar player to Dembele, be it a little more attack minded. The Frenchman likes to drive forward and like Dembele, is hard to knock off the ball.

Before he was neglected by Thomas Tuchel, Rabiot made 14 Ligue 1 appearances and was a composed presence in midfield with his distribution and good positioning.

Rabiot mustered a 93.1% passing accuracy in midfield and liked making the forward forays as well.

The 23-year old completed 1.1 dribbles per game on an average, and his composure on the ball was so good that he averaged just one bad control per game, which is incredible.

Tottenham currently have Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Sissoko, players who can be deployed in the central midfield role.

However, none of the aforementioned names is a complete package while breaking forward, something Rabiot would provide if Spurs sign him.

Rabiot can defend as well, considering his 2.5 tackles a game for PSG in the first half of the season, so he will not affect the balance of the team.

Is £20 million a good fee to pay for Rabiot?

The Frenchman’s contract with PSG comes to an end in July this year. And considering PSG have already signed Paredes, it doesn’t make any sense for them to keep Rabiot to not use him and then let him leave for free in the summer.

Considering the player is still only 23 and has the potential to get better, the said fee seems like reasonable money.

Since Spurs have sold Dembele for nearly half that price, they should work on signing Dembele as Spurs need more numbers to push the teams above them in the coming months.
