Newcastle United are considering a move for Ligue 1 defender: A smart buy

Newcastle United are contemplating a move for AS Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca, it has been reported.

As we head towards the final phase of the winter transfer window, head coach Rafael Benitez is keen on securing the services of a new left-back, with Barreca a potential target, as per Sky Sports Italia.

But is it a prudent move by Benitez?

Antonio Barreca: A smart option for Newcastle United

Barreca joined Monaco in a £9 million deal from Torino last summer and the defender was part of Leonardo Jardim’s plans during the first half of the campaign, notably making seven league appearances.

However, the 23-year-old has struggled to find regular playing-time under Thierry Henry, only being restricted to Cup and Champions League matches. He has made only three appearances under the Frenchman, only one of which came in the league.

But, Barreca is still regarded as a promising left-back, who is known for his pace and athleticism. He is great at providing additional support in the final third, largely thanks to his technical quality.

The Italian is an excellent passer of the ball, who can rotate possession with quick, short passes while his remarkable crossing is the main source of his chance creation. He has averaged almost one key pass per 90 minutes this season.

The aforementioned qualities could be beneficial for Newcastle, especially with someone like Salomon Rondon lurking inside the penalty area while he can also turn out to be useful while linking up with players like Kenedy, Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez in the final third.

Additionally, the former Torino defender loves to take on defenders, having averaged 1.5 dribbles per 90 minutes, which, among Newcastle’s regulars, has only been bettered by Kenedy this season.

Barreca’s pace, on the other hand, allows him to neutralise counter-attacking opportunities he gets back in time more often than not.

However, what makes Barreca such an appealing target for the Magpies is his versatility. The 23-year-old is equally impressive in a back-four as well a back-three formation, both of which have been often used by Benitez this season.

Barreca would provide some much-needed depth in the full-back department, with Paul Dummett being the only reliable option for Newcastle in the left-back position.

All things considered, the Monaco star is certainly a viable transfer target for the Magpies as they look to get out of the relegation scrap.
