Liverpool have to fork out a whopping £50m if they are to harbour any hopes of signing Burnley’s defensive stalwart James Tarkowski this season.
Jurgen Klopp is currently with just one fit centre-half and even though that is the magnificent Virgil Van Dijk, a team fighting for the title cannot afford to go ahead with such a threadbare squad.
Yes, the likes of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez will get fit in due time but there is always uncertainty regarding the fitness issues of the above three. The Reds have a terrific Manchester City side chasing them and this title race is expected to go down to the wire. And there is every chance that squad depth will play a vital role in the ultimate result.
On an added note, someone like Tarkowski has to be seen as a secure long-term investment as well. Liverpool have been solid but there is a consensus that having Van Dijk in their ranks has made someone like Lovren look better than he actually has been.
Liverpool have been knocked out of the cup competitions in January itself and even though the main goal is the Premier League title, the Reds have to strive for a platform where they will be challenging for all the trophies they participate in.
And to that effect, an English international on his way up is an ideal candidate to be invested in.
