Fulham want to sign a defender in the transfer market, and it has been claimed by the Sun that they are favourites to land Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill.
The defender wants to leave Stamford Bridge this month and Arsenal are also believed to be interested in his services.
Gary Cahill: Player Profile
Cahill is a household name and has quite a lot of experience under his belt. Having started his senior career with Aston Villa, the Englishman had successful spells with the Villans and Bolton Wanderers before he moved to Chelsea in the January transfer window of 2012.
The 33-year-old has won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League in his spell with Chelsea. He had been an instrumental figure at the back for his current employers until the appointment of Maurizio Sarri in the summer.
Cahill has been overlooked by Sarri and has made just one appearance in the Premier League so far this season.
The defender’s contract with Chelsea is set to expire at the end of the season, but a move to a side like Fulham seems to be an attractive option for him at the moment.
Though he doesn’t have much pace to offer, Cahill is still an excellent reader of the game and he has the potential to be Fulham’s leader at the back and organise what has been a shaky defence so far this season.
Cahill is exactly what Fulham need
Fulham’s forgettable start in the Premier League after their promotion from the Championship led to the sacking of Slavisa Jokanovic.
The Cottagers’ defence has been the major cause of concern for them and the transfer window is an excellent opportunity for Ranieri to add some steel at the back.
Fulham have managed just 2 clean sheets so far, which is a worrying sign. Though the London based outfit picked some valuable points last month, they were battered 4-1 by Arsenal on the New Year’s Day. Their back line was once again in tatters and their weaknesses were exposed.
Ranieri managed to bring the best out of players like Wes Morgan and Robert Huth at Leicester, so Cahill might eventually become a key player for Fulham if he signs for the club.
Right now, Fulham need a calming influence at the back and Cahill’s arrival would add that to the defence.
