3 Defenders Who Can Help Arsenal Qualify For The Champions League

Arsenal’s defence has turned out to be a major cause of concern this season. Despite Unai Emery’s arrival and the signings made by them during the summer transfer window, the Gunners have stuttered at the back on plenty of occasions.

Sokratis has been steady, if not spectacular, but he lacks pace that is needed to play in a high line. Meanwhile, Shkodran Mustafi has been erratic in his performances and injury to Rob Holding, who is a work-in-progress, has hit the club hard.

While Laurent Koscielny is back in the team following his long injury layoff, Emery needs to bring reinforcements in the on-going transfer window to strengthen his central defence in order to mount a serious challenge for a Champions League spot.

Here are three players Arsenal should look to target:

#3 Daniele Rugani

Currently plying his trade at Juventus, Daniele Rugani would be a much needed shot in the arm for the Gunners.

Rugani’s contract with the Italian giants expires in 2021, but the centre-back hasn’t had the chance to shine at Juventus this season.

The 24-year-old has been handed merely 4 appearances in Serie A so far this term and he might consider a move to a side where he would be able to get regular game time.

Rugani is certainly a proven defender and making a move for him would make a lot of sense.

#2 Gary Cahill

Chelsea’s centre-back Gary Cahill is on the radar of Arsenal and it isn’t something surprising. After Maurizio Sarri’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, Cahill has lost his place and has managed to muster just one appearance in the Premier League so far.

The 33-year-old has a lot of experience under his belt and is accustomed to the animosity of the Premier League.

Though Cahill is 33, he would add a sense of calmness to the back line and that’s something Arsenal sorely need right now. He would be a short-term signing, however.

#1 Ezri Konsa

Brentford defender Erzi Konsa is a versatile player who has the calibre to operate as a centre-back, full-back as well as a midfielder.

Arsenal’s scouts have watched him in action, and he has been quite commendable in the Championship this season.

In 24 appearances, Konsa has managed to muster 1.2 interceptions and 3.8 clearances per game on an average, and the young defender would fit the bill. Besides, the 21-year-old would also be a long-term solution for Emery’s side. (Stats via Whoscored)
