According to theĀ Independent, Arsenal are considering a swap deal that might see Mesut Ozil return to Real Madrid and Isco move to the Emirates next summer.
Europeans champions Real Madrid are poised to make a squad overhaul at the end of the season and shipping out Isco is a likely proposition, given his struggles with both form and fitness this season.
But, will it be a wise option for Arsenal to sign him in exchange for Ozil?
Ozil – Isco swap deal: A good idea?
Before we discuss Isco’s struggles at Real Madrid, it’s only fair to point out Ozil’s troubles this season that has made it difficult for him to find a regular spot in the starting eleven.
The 30-year-old was initially a subject of major discussion in the summer due to some political reasons, which even led to his retirement from the German national team. And that has clearly affected his performances this season as he has been involved in only four goals in 11 matches.
Additionally, he has also struggled with a back problem in recent weeks, which kept him out on the sidelines throughout the month of December before he eventually made his return to the pitch last weekend and featured on Saturday against Burnley.
As far as his future at Arsenal is concerned, Ozil’s lack of mobility and dynamism is clearly not suited to Unai Emery’s lucid approach in the final third, at least on a consistent basis.
But, the former German international could make a world of sense for Real Madrid as he can provide the creative essence in the final third, which could be useful, especially with the likes of Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale up front.
Similarly, Isco could be an ideal fit for Arsenal given his technical superiority as well as exceptional dribbling prowess on the transition.
But, what makes him an appealing target for the Gunners is his dynamism and agility, as he can easily carry the ball in the final third, even under tight pressure while his impressive skill set will allow him to drift past defenders.
Additionally, Isco is a technically astute player, meaning he can easily link-up with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and co. with his quick passes and neat movements.
Therefore, Isco can be deployed as the lone attacking midfielder, with agile wingers on either side of him.
A straight swap between Ozil and Isco will certainly benefit Arsenal in every aspect, but, Real Madrid are unlikely to accept this deal unless the GunnersĀ come up with a sizable amount of additional fee for the Spanish international considering Ozil is already 30.
