3 Left-Backs Newcastle United Should Target In January

It has been a turbulent season for Newcastle so far, with the Magpies struggling with consistency as well as lack of depth in their squad. As a result, coach Rafael Benitez will be keen to bring in some reinforcements in the January transfer window, especially in the left-back position with Paul Dummett being the only recognised option.

We take a look at three good options Newcastle United should target in the upcoming January transfer window to add more strength and depth to their squad.

#3 Jeremy Toljan – Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund fullback Jeremy Toljan has struggled with gametime following the loan acquisition of Achraf Hakimi in the summer. The Real Madrid defender has been in splendid form so far, which has minimised Toljan’s playing time.

In fact, the former Hoffenheim star is yet to make a single appearance this season and has spent most of the season playing for the Dortmund reserves.

Having said that, Toljan is undoubtedly a talented full-back, who is blessed with some serious pace and excellent technical prowess. In addition, he is quite versatile as he can also play as the right-back while his excellent athleticism makes him an ideal fit for Newcastle United.

Toljan will be keen to make a temporary switch to continue his development and a move to St. James’ Park could present him the ideal platform to resurrect his career.

#2 Nicolas Tagliafico – Ajax

A lot has been said about the future of Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico this season, with a host of clubs across England keen to sign the Argentine international.

Following a rather dismal World Cup campaign for Argentina in the summer, Tagliafico has been in excellent form this season and has impressed in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old is a gifted fullback who excels in the technical aspect of the game. He can rotate possession and provide necessary support out wide.

The Ajax star certainly needs to improve on his defensive side but he can be a decent signing for the Magpies.

#1 Matt Targett – Southampton

After a promising loan spell with Fulham last season, where he helped the Cottagers win promotion to the top flight, Southampton left-back Matt Targett has struggled for playing time with the Saints.

In fact, the 23-year-old has made only three Premier League appearances so far, which is low for a promising player of his calibre.

Although Targett may not be one of the best full-backs in the league, his offensive prowess could certainly inject more thrust into the Newcastle attack that has lacked substance this season.

Targett, himself, will be keen to leave St. Mary’s in January after seeing his chances restricted by Ryan Bertrand this season – making him quite an appealing target for the Magpies.
