According to SportBild(via The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the current situation of Nadiem Amiri. The Hoffenheim midfielder has struggled with injury this season but could soon depart the club with both Arsenal and Tottenham vying for his signature.
Tottenham, in particular, are believed to be leading the chase for Amiri, who could reportedly cost around £15 million. But is he the right choice for Spurs?
Nadiem Amiri: Player profile
Amiri is an elegant midfielder, who, unlike most other playmakers, relies heavily on his clever positioning instead of trying to dribble his way through the opposition defence. The 22-year-old is blessed with excellent awareness while he often excels at stringing together quick passes in the final third.
Speaking of his clever positioning, Amiri is a tactically astute playmaker, whose aggression has made him a crucial part of Julian Nagelsmann’s high pressing Hoffenheim side. Indeed, Amiri can press the opposition tirelessly around the middle third of the pitch, which, in turn, helps make Nagelsmann’s tactical philosophy fruitful.
Aside from his clever positioning and aggression, the German international is also known for his defensive contribution, having averaged 2.2 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per game, which is no mean feat for an offensive midfielder.
Should Tottenham sign Nadiem Amiri?
Nadiem Amiri can be an excellent signing for Tottenham Hotspur, due to his tactical awareness which is fused with immense technical prowess – traits that are ideal when playing under someone like Mauricio Pochettino.
The Argentine mastermind is known for encouraging efficient build-up in attack and though Amiri may not be efficient in front of goal, his ability to link-up with his teammates in the final third is what makes him an appealing target for the Lilywhites.
Amiri will not be guaranteed first-team football for Spurs at the moment, largely due to the presence of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli but the Hoffenheim star could certainly prove to be an excellent backup and perhaps more, thanks to his versatility and energy.
Furthermore, the German international is reportedly available for only £15 million, which is no less than a bargain given the quality of the player. And with Spurs refusing to splash the cash in the current climate, such a deal could be ideal for them.
