Manchester United Eyeing Big Money Swoop For World Cup Winner: The Right Fit?

According to German news outlet, SportBILD, Manchester United are still interested in the services of Jerome Boateng. The Bayern Munich superstar was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer but a move didn’t materialise.

However, given United’s topsy-turvy form in the league so far this campaign, coach Jose Mourinho will be eager to reinforce his side’s defensive department.

Jerome Boateng: player profile and stats

It’s almost needless to say that Boateng is regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe, having played a pivotal role in Bayern Munich’s success over the years.

He is primarily known for his excellent ball-playing qualities as well as his ability to make well-timed tackles and crucial interceptions.

Indeed, he has averaged over 85 passes per game this season with a passing accuracy of 86% while his tackling accuracy is an impressive 80%.

Boateng is always a threat in the air, largely thanks to his 192cm frame, which hands him an advantage in physical duels while also making him a threat from set-pieces.

However, what makes the German such a world-class defender are his passes and accurate long-balls, which are normally very effective in terms of build-up. He is someone who isn’t afraid to pass in between the lines.

Is Jerome Boateng a right fit for Manchester United?

Boateng is undoubtedly a talented individual, who oozes quality and can definitely strengthen United’s defensive department.

That being said, the German international has struggled in the last 18 months and has had a steady downfall since the departure of Pep Guardiola.

This season, in particular, has been a woeful one for Boateng, who has failed to provide any kind of solidity to the Bayern backline.

The Bavarians have kept only two clean sheets in their last 11 matches in all competitions, with both of them coming against lowly AEK Athens.

Therefore, splashing big money on Boateng, who hasn’t exactly been successful in recently, could turn out to be a huge gamble.

Boateng tends to struggle against teams who press and that could be a problem in the Premier League.

Thus, it would be wise for the Red Devils to shift their attention to other available targets in the market, with Toby Alderweireld, in particular, being an attractive candidate.
