Arsenal Keeping An Eye On Brazilian Wonderkid: Should The Gunners Sign Him?

According to journalist Paulo Vinicius Coelho (via Sport 1 Brazil), Arsenal have shown interest in the services of EC Bahia’s Brazilian wunderkind Ramires, though there is no contact yet between the two clubs.

The midfielder has impressed in the Brazilian youth divisions in recent months, which has attracted some top clubs around Europe, including Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.

The Gunners, in particular, have reportedly identified him as a long-term successor for Aaron Ramsey, who could depart Emirates in the January transfer window. But, is he really worth the fuss?

Ramires: Player profile

Ramires rose to prominence in September, when he made his debut for Esporte Club Bahia during the 2-0 win over Sport Recife.

Since then, the Brazilian wunderkind has made himself a regular fixture in the starting lineup, featuring in 12 games for the club this season, during which he has scored two goals while providing three assists.

As a result of his impressive performances, Bahia were even convinced to extend his contract till 2022.

The 18-year-old is a central midfielder, who often makes a lot of attacking runs in order to create chances for his team. He can play the box-to-box role and use his pace and skill to get into the half spaces.

He is also quite strong when it comes to set-pieces – a quality Arsenal could certainly use.

And as you would expect from any Brazilian footballer, Ramires is technically astute as he can not only exchange passes on a quick succession but can also influence the game with his clever movements.

However, the 18-year-old struggles, at times, against intense pressing while he also lacks the aerial prowess.

Should Arsenal sign Ramires?

It’s extremely difficult to judge Ramires’ credibility of playing at the highest level of football simply due to the fact that he hasn’t played enough yet.

However, he certainly has the potential and his style of play somewhat resembles Aaron Ramsey which could be a huge bonus for coach Unai Emery.

And while Ramires does fall short in the physical aspect of the game, he can always improve given the fact that he’s 18 years young.

The addition of Ramires will add depth to Arsenal’s youth ranks, which has already impressed in recent years. But, the 18-year-old should definitely remain in the Brazilian league for now and gain some much-needed experience before moving to Europe.
