West Ham United have been hit with injuries this season with a host of key players missing a chunk of action during the first half of the campaign.
The midfield department, in particular, has been a real worry for Manuel Pellegrini with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Carlos Sanchez and Manuel Lanzini facing a spell on the sidelines.
Thus, bringing in some reinforcements could be imperative for West Ham and in this article we talk about three midfielders the Hammers should target in the upcoming January transfer window.
#3 Danny Drinkwater
Drinkwater has had an unfortunate season with so far, with the player deemed surplus to the requirements at the start of this campaign. Although he was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer, a move did not materialise.
But, the upcoming transfer window could present West Ham with an excellent opportunity to sign the English midfielder who is yet to make a single appearance in the Premier League this season.
Drinkwater is a hard-working midfielder who can certainly add more steel and creativity to the Hammers midfield.
The club need to look at a long-term replacement for Mark Noble and since Wilshere hasn’t put his injury troubles behind him, Drinkwater could be the ideal alternative.
#2 Diego Demme
Diego Demme has been the latest player to be linked with a move to West Ham, with Pellegrini keen on attaining the German’s services in January. The German midfielder is regarded as a vital figure in RB Leipzig’s midfield setup, having made 72 league appearances since their promotion to the top flight a couple of years ago.
Demme is yet another hard-working midfielder who can also dictate the tempo of the game with some sound passing in the middle. His work-rate is also excellent and could be an ideal fit for West Ham United.
It is believed that Demme could cost around £15 million in January, which is a snip in the market for any mid-table Premier League club these days.
#1 Sebastian Rode
Another exciting option for West Ham could be Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Sebastian Rode. The German has been off the radar since joining Dortmund in 2016, making just 22 league appearances.
But, he is undoubtedly a talented midfielder who can fortify West Ham’s midfield department thanks to his crisp passing and excellent tackling prowess. He is also an energetic midfielder and can be the engine in West Ham’s midfield.
Rode could be an interesting choice for the Hammers given the fact he did impress in a counter-attacking team when he plied his trade for Eintracht Frankfurt before his initial move to Bayern.
He has just returned from an injury and given Dortmund’s stacked midfield, Rode is likely to be deemed surplus to the requirements by Lucien Favre.
