Newcastle United crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at St. James’ Park yesterday. Beram Kayal’s deflected goal in the first-half eventually proved to be the difference between the two sides as the Magpies are now rock bottom in the league.

Martin Dubravka: 5/10
The custodian could not have done much to deny Kayal from scoring. His distribution from the back was often a let-down, however.
DeAndre Yedlin: 4/10
Yedlin was wasteful while going forward and struggled defensively as well. It was a very quiet afternoon for the right-back.
Jamaal Lascelles: 5/10
The skipper failed to assert himself at the back. He seemed jaded and presented the Seagulls a golden opportunity in the second half.
Federico Fernandez: 6/10
It will be harsh to criticise Fernandez who tried a lot to keep the Magpies in the game. However, he missed a golden chance to score in the second half after he headed over the bar.
Paul Dummett: 6/10
The left-back made a few forward forays and was far more industrious than Yedlin on the other side. He produced a stellar cross in the second half, but Matt Ritchie failed to get to the end of it.
Matt Ritchie: 6/10
He showed positive intent and was involved in most of the attacks the side managed. He also mustered a few decent crosses but the forwards failed to take advantage.
Jonjo Shelvey: 7/10
Shelvey was arguably Newcastle United’s best player on the pitch. He went forward quite often and tried to create openings. He went close to scoring in the first-half but was denied by Matt Ryan.
Mohamed Diame: 3/10
It was a forgettable outing for Diame who looked absolutely clueless on the pitch. He failed to produce any sort of a spark in the attacking sector and didn’t do enough to shield the back four either.
Kenedy: 4/10
Kenedy never looked like he could test the Brighton defence. Despite his credentials, he flattered to deceive and couldn’t really trouble Bruno the way Rafael Benitez would have liked.
Ayoze Perez: 4/10
The attacker missed a crucial chance early on and was mostly dominated by the central defensive duo of Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk.
Yoshinori Muto: 5/10
Muto looked lively in segments but overall, a lot more was expected of him.

He came on for Muto on the 73rd minute but struggled to influence the game.
