Newcastle United scored two goals inside the opening 10 minutes but succumbed to Manchester United at the Old Trafford earlier today to come away empty handed.
Newcastle United player ratings
Martin Dubravka: 7/10
The custodian was alert throughout the first-half and can hardly be blamed for the three goals that his side conceded, particularly after making two crucial saves in the second half.
DeAndre Yedlin: 7/10
Yedlin knitted the right balance between his defensive duties and attacking endeavours.
Jamaal Lascelles: 6/10
For a significant portion of the game, Lascelles kept the likes of Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku quiet.
Federico Fernandez: 6/10
He put in a solid performance alongside Lascelles at the heart of the back line in the first half. But once Man United pressed the Magpies defence, the team just capitulated.
Javier Manquillo: 6/10
Ashley Young and Juan Mata tried to make the outing difficult for Manquillo, but he meticulously stood up to the challenges that were thrown at him.
Matt Ritchie: 6/10
Ritchie was superb in the first-half but he withered in the second-half and couldn’t do much in the final third with the slim chances he had.
Jonjo Shelvey: 7/10
The midfielder was good at relieving pressure with his passing in the first half. Could have maybe done more in the second half to hold on to the ball better as it kept coming back.
Mohamed Diame: 7.5/10
Diame dominated the midfield with his pace, physicality and willingness to make his presence felt. He was the engine room for Benitez’s side. But, he could have made it three for Newcastle after Man United’s first goal and also gave away a cheap freekick for Mata to score.
Kenedy: 8/10
He scored the first goal of the game and he constantly tried to threaten the back line with his pace and exuberance.
Ayoze Perez: 7/10
Perez assisted Kenedy in finding the back of the net and was a big asset on the break during the first half. Like the rest of the team, he had a quiet second half.
Yoshinori Muto: 7.5/10
He scored a magnificent goal early in the first half to hand his side the cushion of a two-goal lead.
