Liverpool Linked With A Move For Versatile Spanish Attacker: A Shrewd Deal By Klopp?

Liverpool could be busy in the upcoming January transfer window as latest reports indicate the Reds could be after Athletic Bilbao attacker Iker Muniain.

Spanish outlet Marca (via the Metro) believe Jürgen Klopp’s side have already made their move for the Spaniard and will compete with Napoli for the Spaniard’s signature.

Muniain’s contract expires next summer which means Bilbao will be helpless if he agrees a pre-contract move with a foreign club.

Muniain – Factfile

Muniain is a product of Bilbao’s famed youth academy and has had a consistent season so far. The 25-year-old missed a large part of last season because of a cruciate ligament rupture but has returned as a better player this season.

Muniain has mustered four goals in the league this season but more importantly, it’s his versatility that has raised a few eyebrows. He has also managed 1.9 dribbles per game in the league, showing his ability to take on players and beat them with his pace and ability.

Athletic Bilbao manager Eduardo Berizzo has managed to integrate Muniain in a central midfield role and the Spaniard has done well, scoring twice in three appearances in that role.

Muniain’s form before his injury last season was up and down. The 2016-17 season was one of his best seasons personally as he managed seven goals and assisted two.

A shrewd move by Klopp

Klopp has slowly managed to improve the overall quality of his squad and not just his first team. He started off his career as a left winger and that is his strongest position, so he could add more depth to that particular position.

Xherdan Shaqiri has added more quality to the squad as he can not only replace Salah on the right but has also shown that he can play in a central role.

Muniain is a similar player. Not only can he push Mane for a first-team place but can also feature in midfield, like Shaqiri.

Liverpool’s style is all-action and Muniain has played in similar setups under Marcelo Bielsa and Ernesto Valverde, former managers at San Mames.

Liverpool spent good money in the summer but if they can add a player of Muniain’s calibre for free, it would be a shrewd deal.
