Manchester United are one of a long list of clubs interested in the services of Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. The Ajax wunderkind has been linked with a move away from Eredivisie next summer with a host of clubs reportedly competing for his signature.
Although de Ligt has played down speculation linking him to a move out of Ajax, a big transfer move could be on the horizon next summer, especially if he can maintain his consistent form in the Eredivisie this season.
We look at three reasons why the Red Devils should go all out for Matthijs de Ligt who already seems like a star in that Netherlands jersey.
#3 Lack of quality defensive options
Manchester United’s lack of quality in the defensive department has been well documented. Even though the Red Devils have numbers at the back, it seems more like a case of quantity over quality at the moment.
The likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, in particular, have failed to perform on a consistent basis and have shown weaknesses while playing at the highest level of club football. As a result, United have been forced to find not just a replacement but an upgrade on the English defensive duo.
Matthijs de Ligt, in that regard, could be an ideal candidate given his obvious qualities at the back. Although one may question the signing of a 19-year-old defender, he has a considerable amount of experience, having made over 50 Dutch top-flight appearances and thus, could be a viable option for the Premier League giants.
#2 de Ligt could help United’s build-up play with his technical prowess
One of de Ligt’s biggest assets in his overall gameplay is his ability to circulate possession. The youngster is blessed with a superior technical quality, which makes him an integral figure in Ajax’s build-up from the back.
Indeed, only Daley Blind and Frenkie de Jong have averaged more accurate short passes than de Ligt this season while the youngster also averages almost three long balls per game.
This could be a huge asset for Manchester United, who have lacked the services of a genuine ball-playing defender in recent years. While Eric Bailly has emerged as a decent and reliable option at the back, the addition of a more technical defender in Matthijs de Ligt could add an extra dimension to United’s build-up from the back.
#1 A calculated gamble
The addition of Matthijs de Ligt will not only revamp Manchester United’s defensive department but at the tender age of just 19, he could also serve as a prospect for the Red Devils.
While he may find it difficult to make the transition from the Eredivisie to a much faster-paced version of the Premier League, de Ligt will have time on his side not only to improve himself as a player but also to integrate into Manchester United’s playing style. In other words, he could be a safer investment when compared to the likes of Toby Alderweireld or Jerome Boateng.
However, with so many clubs vying for his signature, it remains to be seen whether or not will United be able to secure the services of this highly talented defender, who is more than ready to make the next step in his career.
