Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League continued as they secured a thumping 3-0 win over Southampton at the Anfield on Saturday. An own goal by Wesley Hoedt and a goal each by Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah ensured all three points for the Reds.
However, their victory came at a cost as their central defender Virgil van Dijk was forced to leave the pitch after 55 minutes and was replaced by Joe Gomez. There is no denying that van Dijk has been an instrumental figure at the back for Jurgen Klopp’s side and has been rock-solid so far.
In 6 Premier League games so far this season, the 27-year-old has mustered 1.2 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 4.8 clearances and 0.5 block per game on an average. To the delight of the Liverpool fans, van Dijk’s injury hasn’t emerged as something serious and he could be in line to feature against Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday.
When quizzed about van Dijk’s injury, Klopp said: “He already had a bruise in the ribs before the PSG game, which is very uncomfortable and today he got another hit there. It’s not cool but should not be too serious. It should be absolutely OK, hopefully. I didn’t hear anything different.”
