Wolves Player Ratings Against Everton: Neves Lives Up To The Hype

Wolverhampton Wanderers made their long-awaited Premier League comeback this past weekend but had to settle for a draw against 10-men Everton.

Goals from Ruben Neves and Raul Gimenez earned Nuno Espirito’s men a point as they came from behind twice to break Everton hearts. Here are the player ratings…

Rui Patricio: (6/10)

The Portuguese shot-stopper made some good saves whenever called upon and was not at fault for either of the goals. He looked calm and composed while handling the ball and his distribution was pretty impressive.

Ryan Bennet: (7/10)

The 28-year-old was one of Wolves’ better performers today and should have had an assist after putting Jimenez clean through on goal but the striker couldn’t find the back of the net. The defender did not commit any errors and put in an assured performance.

Conor Coady: (6.5/10)

The captain was solid at the back and marshalled his troops well. He boasted an impressive pass completion rate of 92.1% and looked adept at dealing with the Everton attacks. Could have done better for Richarlison’s second goal as the Englishman chose to backtrack instead of closing down the winger.

Willy Bolly: (6/10)

Bolly was dominant in the air and won the ball aggressively. He played some sumptuous long diagonals, showcasing his passing ability. The Frenchman at times dwelled on the ball for too long, losing possession in dangerous areas and should have cleared the ball from the set-piece that led to the opener.

Matt Doherty: (7/10)

The Irishman was defensively sound and was an attacking outlet on the right. He whipped in some telling crosses and linked up well with the forwards.

Jonny: (6/10)

The full-back completed his defensive and attacking duties diligently. He made way for Ruben Vinagre in the second half.

Ruben Neves: (9/10)

The youngster did not put a foot wrong all evening. Neves matched the lofty expectation of fans with another all-action performance. He scored a brilliant free kick in the first half and then turned provider for Gimenez’s goal. He was everywhere, dropping deep to collect the ball, spraying passes and then bombing forward to help the attackers. The 21-year-old looks set to take the Premier League by storm.

Joao Moutinho: (7/10)

The Portuguese international was neat and tidy with his passing. Moutinho dictated the play alongside his compatriot and displayed a calm demeanour in the centre of the park.

Helder Costa: (6/10)

Looked lively, tried to take on opponents but lacked physicality against some of Everton’s defenders. He was replaced by Leo Bonatini in the 71st minute.

Diogo Jota: (7/10)

Won the freekick that resulted in the goal after he was fouled by Phil Jagielka. He burst forward whenever he got on the ball and offered a threat all game.

Raul Jimenez: (8/10)

Made some delightful runs into the channels and took his goal well. He troubled the Everton defence with his movement and looked sharp.

Substitutes

Leo Bonatini: (5/10)

Bonatini was sent in search for an equaliser and his introduction meant Jimenez was shifted to the right. He could not influence the game and did not have much of an impact.

Ruben Vinagre: N/A

He added some energy on the left flank and will hope for more first-team opportunities in the coming season.

Morgan Gibbs-White: N/A

Not much time to make an impact.
