Nuno Espirito Santo does not seem totally convinced with the Wolves squad at his disposal, after picking up just one point from their first two games. They are linked with a host of players from around Europe and their links with Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes might see them land yet another experienced star in Miguel Veloso. The 32-year-old is currently a free agent, having not signed a contract extension with Italian side Genoa and reports suggest that Wolves could land him on a free transfer this month.
Experience And Variety
Having started his career with Sporting, Veloso spent two stints in Italy, making close to 100 league appearances, including 21 Serie A starts last season. He also has 56 appearances for his national side and will be a useful addition to the squad at Molineux.
A defensive midfielder by trait, the 32-year old is comfortable playing across the backline and can also put in a shift as a central midfielder. With great technique and understanding of the game, Veloso is a threat over a dead-ball while his ability to break up play in the middle of the park makes him a real asset for most teams in Europe.
Last season, he registered 1.8 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game but what makes him an interesting catch for Wolves is the fact that he is also effective in linking up with the attack. He averages a key pass per game and also takes more than a shot every 90 minutes. His passing success rate has been over 80% throughout his career and his crosses are also a delight for most strikers.
At 32, he has played in three different leagues in Europe and has gathered loads of experience that will help Santo’s side put up a tougher challenge in the coming days.
Chances At Molineux
Santo has the likes of Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss with similar traits while Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho are options in the centre of the park for Wolves. Young Morgan Gibbs-White will certainly get his chances but the tenacity and versatility of Veloso could be a huge addition to their squad.
He can put in a shift in various roles and is a specialist in killing off games, which will surely help Wolves in the long run. Coming in as a free agent, he is a no-brainer for Wolves as there is very little risk associated with bringing him to the Molineux. He may not have too many years at his best left but at the moment, he is a smart addition for the newly promoted Premier League outfit.
