Leicester City linked with a move for defensive ace: The depth Puel needs

According to the Daily Mail, Leicester City are in talks with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of Filip Benkovic. The Croatian defender has attracted the interest of a series of top clubs across Europe including Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund. But, it appears Leicester are already negotiating a transfer fee.

Benkovic’s current contract with Dinamo runs until 2022 and he could cost Leicester around £13 million. However, the Premier League outfit need to act swift as we approach the final few days of the transfer market.

Benkovic – Player profile

Benkovic started his career at his hometown club Dinamo Zagreb back in 2012 as a 15-year-old. He was gradually promoted to the senior side in 2015 following a series of impressive performances in the youth leagues.

Since then, he has made over 75 appearances for the Croatian giants, 25 of which came last season as they lifted the Croatian league title. But, the Modri could find it difficult to keep hold of their prized asset.

Known for his massive 6 ft 4 figure, Benkovic is an intimidating player to deal with as his sheer physical prowess helps him dominate the defensive area. Despite his height, however, Benkovic is also pretty quick and has a good positional awareness.

Additionally, his aerial prowess also makes him a threat during set-pieces, making him a perfect fit for the Premier League.

Why do Leicester City need Filip Benkovic?

Benkovic will be a smart signing for the Foxes considering their lack of options in the defensive department.

Defensive star Harry Maguire has been linked with a move away from King Palace Stadium following an exceptional World Cup campaign that saw him become one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders this summer. Although Leicester are adamant on keeping hold of their prized asset, anything can happen as we approach the final few days of the summer transfer window.

Thus, Benkovic could prove to be an astute long-term replacement for Maguire. Moreover, the Foxes also lack options in central defence with new signing Jonny Evans being their only reliable choice.

The Leicester fans expect the club to progress after a top half finish last time out and for a pragmatic coach like Puel, the presence of depth in the defensive department will be key for a good league finish.
