Transfer News
According to the reports from Daily Mail, Everton are considering a move for Villarreal attacker Denis Cheryshev on the back of his impressive World Cup where he scored 4 goals.
Marco Silva made his first signing of his tenure by bringing in Richarlison from Watford. He wants to further bolster his attacking options by bringing in Cheryshev and provide competition to the other attackers.
Cheryshev – Player Profile
Cheryshev made 24 appearances last season for Villarreal, scoring 2 goals and notching up an assist. The Russian has played most of his football on the left wing. However, he can also play on the left side of a midfield three and can play as a false nine whenever needed. Cheryshev is an excellent free kick taker and has a lethal shot from distance, something he showed in the World Cup.
The Russian is a good passer of the ball and is effective while playing on the counter as he always tends to make the right runs and has a good starting position in his own half. Last season, he worked hard for the team making 1.1 tackles per game for Villarreal.
His impressive work rate will appeal to Marco Silva as he wants his teams to press the opposition and force them in committing mistakes. The gaffer wants his team to win the ball higher up the field and move the ball quickly, maintaining width.
Cheryshev would fit perfectly in such a system as he has excellent vision and is always looking to cut inside and link up with his teammates.
Strengths, Weaknesses and how Cheryshev can fit in at Everton
Marco Silva is a highly rated young manager and he has been brought in to take Everton to the next level. He has used the 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations on a regular basis. The gaffer has many attacking options which include Theo Walcott, Yannick Bolasie, Richarlison, Ademola Lookman and Kevin Mirallas.
It is tough to imagine that in spite of all the qualities that Cheryshev brings, he will displace Richarlison who should be the first choice left winger for the Toffees next season.
So Cheryshev will play the role of an impact substitute which means he can trouble tired defences with his pace and guile in the latter stages of games.
Adjusting to the physical rigours of the Premier League could be a daunting task for the Cheryshev as he has played all his football in Spain.
His inconsistency is also a worry and he has failed to deliver on a regular basis. However, if Everton can get Cheryshev on the cheap, they could be picking up a potential bargain if the Russian can replicate his World Cup form.
