Rangers 3-1 NK Maribor: Players ratings from another impressive win

Rangers’ Europa League qualifier game against Maribor at the Ibrox turned out to be a fascination encounter. A second-half blitz earned the home side a 3-1 win after a pretty balanced first half.

Here are the Rangers player ratings against Maribor:

Allan McGregor – 7 /10

The veteran made a couple of decisive stops but could have done little to stop Bajde’s stunning strike late in the first half.

James Tavernier – 8.5/10

The skipper is often lauded for his attacking contribution and has often been criticised for the lack of defensive work rate. Last night, however, he not only scored from the spot to restore the lead but also managed a few crucial blocks, tackles and clearances at the back.

Connor Goldson – 8 /10

Goldson maintained his composure at the back with his physical and aerial presence and made a few crucial tackles and clearances while under pressure.

Nikola Katic – 7/10

Was nervy at times, but partnered Goldson well once again at the centre of Rangers’ defence. The Croatian has a bright future and should do better with time if handed opportunities week in week out.

Jon Flanagan – 6.5/10

An early booking stopped him from making enough forward runs, but the former Liverpool fullback balanced his game on the left flank and mostly focussed on getting his defensive duties done. Was cautious with his tackling after the early booking.

Lassana Coulibaly – 9 /10

Once again, Coulibaly made an impact in midfield. He put in a few last-ditch tackles to deny the opponents a clear sight on goal and also tested the visitors’ defensive resilience with a few driving runs. Coulibaly got his reward late in the game when Jamie Murphy’s corner bounced off his shoulder and ended up in the back.

Ovie Ejaria: 6.5/10

Had a decent outing in the middle of the park as he mostly focussed on carrying the ball forward, winning back possession by pressing, creating space and linking up with fellow teammates all over the pitch.

Scott Arfield – 7.5/10

The ex-Burnley attacker was again given a free role. His touches were heavy at times but he played a crucial role in Rangers’ opener as Maribor couldn’t deal with his driving run.

Daniel Candeias – 7/10

The hard-working Portuguese attacker created a few chances from the right flank and combined well with Tavernier who mostly spent his time in an advanced role.

Ryan Kent – 7/10

Kent showed glimpses of his ability on the left wing and played a part in Rangers’ early opener. Was lively while making runs and also dropped back time and again to offer more numbers in the middle of the park. He could have been more clinical in front of goal, however.

Alfredo Morelos – 8/10

Morelos broke the deadlock early in the game when the ball fell kindly for him after Handanovic denied Kent. The Colombian also won a spot-kick early in the second half which was converted by skipper Tavernier with great confidence and composure.

Substitutes

Jamie Murphy – 7/1o

Murphy made an instant impact from the bench as his cross bounced off Coulibaly to end up in the back of the net in the closing stages of the game.
