Tottenham Hotspur will be keen on continuing their good form when they host Fulham at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The Lilywhites registered a narrow win over Newcastle last week thanks to early goals from Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli.
Fulham, on the other hand, are expected to give a tougher fight after tasting defeat in their opening game against Crystal Palace. The newly-promoted side will want to get a positive result after going on a spending spree in the summer.
We take a look at three key battles that will decide the outcome of the game.
Eric Dier vs Tom Cairney
It will be a battle between two talented English midfielders when Eric Dier and Tom Cairney go head to head this weekend.
Dier, known for his robust style of play in midfield, has always been a vital cog in the Tottenham midfield. And given the fact that Mauricio Pochettino will miss out on the services of a Victor Wanyama this week, Dier’s presence could be critical against Fulham.
The former Sporting CP starlet will have a tough task of stopping Tom Cairney, who is poised to play a key role in midfield alongside Jean-Michael Seri. Cairney’s ability to thread a pass could inflict serious damage to Tottenham, who, at times, looked wobbly against Newcastle.
As a result, Dier’s performance against Cairney will go a long way in depicting the outcome of the game.
Serge Aurier vs Ryan Sessegnon
Following an average Premier League debut, Fulham superstar Ryan Sessegnon will be keen on showing his true qualities against Tottenham this weekend.
The 18-year-old wunderkind attempted zero dribbles, took only one shot and completed one key pass against Crystal Palace. But, his ability to carve out the opposing defence with his sharp runs is well documented. He could be an important attacking outlet for the Cottagers as they aim to breach a disciplined Tottenham backline.
Sessegnon will come up against an equally talented defender in Serge Aurier. Although the former PSG star is known for his qualities going forward, getting past him will be a big challenge for Sessegnon. There’s no doubt over the fact that he has potential to make a big impression even against the most well-accomplished defenders.
Davinson Sanchez vs Aleksandar Mitrovic
Regarded as one of the most promising defenders in South American football, Davinson Sanchez has done really well in the last few months.
The Colombian international will be facing a stern test against Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic this weekend. The physical forward will be keen on getting off the mark after making a big-money from Newcastle United in the transfer window.
Although odds do favour the Colombian, Mitrovic is a born-warrior and is just the kind of striker Fulham need if they are to snatch at least a point against Spurs on Saturday.
