According to recent reports, Barcelona midfielder, Andre Gomes, has been shockingly linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Portuguese international is struggling in the ranks of the La Liga giants and he desperately needs a new endeavour to resurrect his career which is rapidly on the decline. Apart from The Wolves, the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Valencia have also put him on their radar.
Under the stewardship of Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolverhampton Wanderers achieved promotion to the Premier League by lifting the Championship silverware last season. They were intriguing to watch and there is no denying that their hunger and willingness to get the uplift earned them deserved dividends. However, they are due to face sterner tests this season as they are going to lock horns against the elite English clubs.
Espirito Santo has already made some quality signings in Diogo Jota, Willy Boly and Leo Bonatini to beef up their arsenal. However, their apparent interest to sign Gomes makes a lot of sense, for he can team up well with someone like Ruben Neves in the middle of the park. Such a scenario will see a drastic upliftment in the quality and level of the midfield play.
One of the latest reports by Metro stated that Barca have contacted Arsenal and are willing to ship Gomes out to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Reportedly, the Gunners are willing to roll out a transfer fee of £18million but Barcelona are holding out for a higher price tag. The future of the 24-year-old is unclear and although the North London outfit have the ball in their court to sign him, Wolves should take a big step soon.
Gomes is desperate to get regular game time under his belt and the Premier League newcomers can give him the same. Last season, he was handed merely 6 starts in the Spanish top flight and the pressure of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world is taking a toll on his form. He has an adequate amount of experience under his belt and just needs some confidence to get back on the right track.
Wolves do need more quality to face the animosity that the English top division has on offer. A central midfielder like Gomes, with his top-level experience and undeniable talent, will certainly provide that. He reads the game well, cushions the back line and is someone who is good in the air.
He needs a change of scenery and it will be interesting to follow this particular development over the next couple of weeks.
