Manchester United surely have a lopsided attacking department, with the majority of their forwards preferring to play on the left flank. Signing a right-winger would have been one of the priorities this season but the improvement of the backline and the midfield was surely kept ahead on the list.
But United’s attempts to bolster their right wing doesn’t seem to be paying dividends, with nothing concrete emerging as of now. But Ante Rebic, who starred for Croatia in their World Cup campaign, is being linked with a transfer to Jose Mourinho’s team now. Here, we analyze the whole situation surrounding United’s dilemma over the right-flank issues.
Gareth Bale hinted that he wanted a move away from Real Madrid during the Champions League celebrations. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus means that the Liga Liga side cannot afford to lose two of their star men in the same transfer window. Hence, a move for Bale seems to be impractical.
Willian was another prime contender to be inducted into United’s squad. However, Chelsea seem to have learned from their past mistakes and are reluctant to sell the Brazilian to a direct rival. Nemanja Matic, who arrived at United from Chelsea last season was stellar for Jose Mourinho’s team and is one of the vital cogs in his setup currently.
Willian would solve United’s problems but Chelsea’s valuation of him seems to be too high for a player who is 30 years old. Moreover, he was inconsistent last season and was sporadic during the World Cup too. A gradual dip in his form can be observed quite clearly and the board doesn’t seem too keen to make a move.
Rebic is a 24-year-old and is one of the few traditional wingers who can boast of a high work-rate throughout the 90 minutes. His ability to send in telling crosses from the byline and stretch the opposition backline will be welcomed by Jose. He is strong and tall and is a complete workhorse, always willing to put in a defensive shift whenever required. Rebic’s tendency to contribute to the defensive duties and his strong attitude would fit in well with Jose’s demanding nature.
With the window gradually coming to a close, it is high time Jose takes a decision. As is natural, he will be backing his own instincts but making a late move for Rebic might just unsettle their rivals with many familiar with the likes of Willian and hence this is a rumour which is unlikely to die anytime soon.
