Everton have joined the race to sign Hector Herrera this summer, according to latest reports from Portuguese news outlet Correio da Manha. The Mexican international has attracted interest from a series of top clubs around Europe, following his impressive performances in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
In fact, Hector Herrera has also courted the interest of European champions Real Madrid as well as league rivals Arsenal and West Ham United. Therefore, it remains to be seen if FC Porto can manage to keep hold of their star midfielder this summer.
Hector, 28, made his name in his native Mexico. His impressive performances with Pachuca in the Mexican league earned him a move to FC Porto in the summer of 2013. Since moving to Europe, Herrera has been one of the most consistent players in the LIGA NOS, featuring in over 130 matches in the Portuguese top flight.
In addition, the 28-year-old has also made almost 200 competitive appearances for FC Porto, since joining them in 2013. He played a vital role as Porto secured the elusive Liga NOS title, making 29 appearances. He has also won the Gold Cup as well as securing the Olympic Medal with his country Mexico back in 2012.
Everton, on the other hand, are on the verge of undergoing a busy transfer window this summer, as newly appointed head coach Marco Silva plans a squad overhaul. The Portuguese mastermind, who has extensive knowledge about the Portuguese top flight is well aware of Hector Herrera’s qualities in midfield and has therefore identified him as a top target this summer.
Despite a spending spree last summer, the Toffees still lack depth in midfield, with most of their new signings failing to make a mark in the English top flight. Both Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson are yet to live up to the billing, with the Dutch international, in particular, being expected to leave the club this summer.
Therefore, the addition of a new top quality midfielder is apparently imperative for the Toffees as they look to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window and Hector Herrera is definitely a viable option for the Merseyside giants.
As mentioned earlier, the Mexican international is no stranger when it comes to experience and could provide a huge boost for Everton next season, largely thanks to his leadership abilities. Having captained FC Porto in recent years, the 28-year-old can be an ideal man to lead Everton as they aim for a resurgence in the Premier League next season.
