After being pretty active during summer’s transfer window, Everton have been rather quiet this summer and are yet to sign even a single player. The Merseyside outfit have let go of five players, including Wayne Rooney, so there is room for a few players to be signed pretty soon.
When Marco Silva was asked about the same, he said, “We have to do it. We have our targets and we have already decided the positions we want to improve in our squad.
“We believe in all of our players but, for sure, we will do that and we have decided our targets.
“Our board, our chairman, our sporting director, they are doing everything they can to give me the players I ask them for.”
Everton in for Diego Laxalt
Latest reports reveal that the club are eyeing a deal for Uruguayan World Cup star Diego Laxalt. The Genoa midfielder was predominantly used as a left-back, which isn’t his natural position, but he managed to do well anyway.
Predominantly a left-sided defensive midfielder, Laxalt is a pretty versatile player and can be played as a left-back or a left midfielder. Leighton Baines is the first-choice fullback for the Toffees but they need someone younger who can play week in week out.
Baines is 33 already and isn’t getting any younger. Brendan Galloway, on the other hand, is too young to be trusted in the league so soon. That is where Laxalt could be the ideal signing.
Having played in the Serie A, he has the tactical know-how of how to defend and could be the security Silva needs at the back. The Portuguese is a combination of pragmatism and proactiveness, and like Laxalt showed playing for Uruguay, he can mix caution with aggression which is why he’d be the perfect all-round signing.
How much will he cost?
Reports indicate he could cost £18m which isn’t much in the modern-day market, to be honest. Still only 25, Laxalt would be a long-term signing and could solve more than one problematic area on the squad owing to his versatility.
Last season, Everton spend big money on buying a lot of midfielders but completely neglected the balance of the squad. A signing like Laxalt would add more balance to the squad and help Silva achieve his targets this season.
