According to a recent report by Daily Record, Derby County are on the verge of signing Martyn Waghorn from Ipswich Town. The report states that Frank Lampard’s side are set to roll out £4million plus add-ons to prise Waghorn out of the Portman Road. Waghorn would be Lampard’s fifth signing this summer after being appointed as the new manager of the club.
Fact File
Waghorn emerged through the youth ranks of Sunderland and while he was on their books, he underwent loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Leicester City before the Foxes signed him permanently in the summer of 2009. After his switch, he had loan spells with Hull City, Millwall and Wigan Athletic and he was sold to the Latics in the January transfer window of 2014.
He was introduced to Scottish football by Rangers who signed him in the summer of 2015 and after a couple of seasons with the Glasgow based outfit, he was lured by Ipswich Town. The striker had a remarkable season with the Tractor Boys last term as he managed to find the back of the net on 16 occasions and also contributed 11 assists in the Championship.
Willingness To Leave
A few days ago, Sky Sports had reported that Waghorn had submitted his transfer request and despite initial interest from Sheffield United, the Blades had withdrawn themselves from negotiations owing to the high asking price. Thus, the Rams are apparently the only club willing to roll out the money, which can go up to £8million if they manage to secure promotion.
FFP Restrictions
Matej Vydra is likely to make an exit from the Pride Park Stadium to make space for Waghorn and to ensure that Derby County comply with the restrictions imposed by Financial Fair Play. Although Vydra was linked with a move to Leeds United, Derbyshire Live have reported lately that the Whites have ended their interest in their pursuit of signing the Derby County striker.
The Whites were yet to come to a conclusion for the £11million rated player and his personal wages were also a subject of discussion. As a result, Marcelo Bielsa’s camp had turned their attention towards Middlesbrough’s Patrick Bamford, who is set to undergo a medical to complete a £7million move to the Elland Road. This complicates Waghorn’s move to Derby County to an extent. So far this summer, Lampard has managed to sign Jack Marriott, Florian Jozefzoon, Mason Mount and Harry Wilson to enhance the quality of his arsenal.
