Transfer News:
Anthony Martial’s career at Manchester United has been under the scanner ever since his agent spoke out regarding the Frenchman’s intentions of leaving the club.
A recent report has linked Martial with a move to Chelsea and looking at the current scenario, an exit might seem to be the best option for the disgruntled forward. The 22-year-old has endured a difficult time ever since Alexis Sanchez arrived in January. Let us take a deeper look into the Frenchman’s scenario at the club.
Initially, Martial’s preferred left-wing slot was taken up by Sanchez and that jarred his rhythm to an extent. However, the Chilean has displayed on numerous occasions that it would be beneficial for the team that he plays ahead of Martial. Sanchez’s work-ethic, off the ball work, the tendency to contribute to the defensive duties regularly is more effective that Martial’s overall style of play.
Sanchez and Martial have had to compete for the spot on the left flank and the Chilean has come out on top. His notable contributions in United’s victories over Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in April, coupled with the energy that he instils in the team are quite commendable. Moreover, Sanchez’s level of commitment on the field rubs off on the other players and this is a trait that Jose is a huge fan of.
On the other hand, Martial is more of an out and out winger, someone who is capable of coming up with truly breathtaking stuff with the ball at his feet. However, his lethargic attitude without the ball has seen the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard stroll ahead of him in the pecking order at United. Even Sanchez, who endured an uneven opening six months at the club, has managed to upstage Martial and this has certainly not gone down well with him.
As a 22-year-old lad, Martial wants to play but he cannot expect the minutes to fall on his lap. He can be rotated with Romelu Lukaku for the striker’s position and even with Sanchez or Rashford on the left-wing.
However, for this to happen, Martial needs to ensure that he keeps his head down and improves on the finer aspects of his game. Chelsea might be interested in him but Martial and United should not be giving up on one another so easily. This is a lad with immense potential and the board and the player need to sit down and try and sort this mess out.
A rejuvenated Anthony will be worth more than any new signing for Manchester United.
