With just over a week to go before the Premier League transfer window closes, Chelsea are set to finally wake up from their slumber and spend big.
A report from the Dailystar indicates the Blues are targeting a move for Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski. The Pole’s valuation is more than £80m but the steep price isn’t deterring Chelsea.
New manager Maurizio Sarri has been able to add just one outfield player so far in Jorginho and considering Chelsea’s lack of goal-scorers last season, Lewandowski could be the solution.
Robert Lewandowski – Fact file and why he’d be the ideal forward for Chelsea
The Pole has been one of the best strikers in Europe for quite a while now. After winning the league and cup double whilst at Borussia Dortmund under Jürgen Klopp, he moved to Bayern Munich.
One of the reasons was because Dortmund weren’t the same force in Europe anymore. Lewandowski hoped to win the Champions League with Bayern but the Bavarians have moved backwards in the last couple of years as they have refrained from spending big in the transfer market.

Last season, Bayern even fell to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final of the DFB Pokal and the time for Lewandowski is perhaps right to move on and try a new challenge.
His goals tally in the last few seasons has been incredible, to say the least. The 29-year old has hit the 30-goal mark in two of the last three Bundesliga seasons and he missed the mark by just one goal last season as he finished with 29 strikes.
It’s not just Lewandowski’s goals that’ll help Chelsea, though. Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli played some enterprising attacking football last season and their pressing was incredible.
The front three of Insigne, Mertens and Callejon often harried the opposition for time on the ball. None of the current Chelsea forwards at the club has played in such a system. Lewandowski, on the other hand, is much more used to a similar system.
While Bayern aren’t known for pressing teams all that often, prior to his move to the Allianz Arena, Lewandowski was part of a Dortmund setup where gegenpressing was the blueprint.
Under Jürgen Klopp, Lewandowski was part of an attack that pressed opposition defenders into giving the ball away, something we could see Chelsea doing a lot more next season with Sarri in charge.
It’s not just about the goals; it’s about what else the strike brings. And Lewandowski could bring a lot of quality to the Chelsea attack.
