According to Mirror, English third-tier outfit Gillingham FC should brace themselves for an Arsenal raid regarding the potential transfer of their star goalkeeper Tomas Holy. The Czech keeper has reportedly impressed the Gunner hierarchy following an impressive season.
Holy initially moved to England last year after being released by Sparta Praha. And since arriving at Gillingham, the 26-year-old has been a revelation as he ended last campaign as one of the club’s standout performers in the league.
As a result, Arsenal are keen on securing his services although they could face stiff competition from a host of other clubs across Europe including arch-rivals Chelsea.
Holy was, in fact, an ever-present figure in between the sticks for the Gils, featuring in over 4,000 minutes of league action in this past season. During his 45 games, the Czech kept 10 clean sheets whilst conceding only 52 goals helping his side stay safe from the relegation battle.
Highly known for his enormous figure, Tomas Holy is an easily distinguishable player thanks to his 6ft 9-inch stature that will easily make him the tallest player to play in the Premier League this season.
Although the interest from Arsenal might seem rather bizarre given the fact that the Gunners have already signed Bernd Leno this summer whilst having the services of Petr Cech and David Ospina, the move could make a world of sense for a number of reasons.
New signing Leno will most likely be instilled as the number one keeper for the North London giants next season. However, the likes of Cech and Ospina face an uncertain future at the club with both the players being linked with a move away from Emirates this summer.
Cech, in particular, has even attracted the interest of his former employers, who are keen to reunite with the Czech Republic international. Thus, the addition of Tomas Holy could be useful as the Gunners look to ensure a prominent back-up for their number one keeper.
Additionally, even Leno has appeared quite tentative at times during his time with Bayer Leverkusen and should he fail to address his error-prone nature, Holy’s potential chances of making the first-team are certainly not far-fetched.
Moreover, the 26-year-old goalkeeper is not expected to cost a fortune either while the prospect of playing in the English top flight could easily lure Holy to North-London. Although it remains to be seen if the Gunners will be able to fend off other suitors in order to secure the services of this goalkeeper this summer.
