Arsenal are breathing a new life under the tutelage of Unai Emery and the former Paris Saint-Germain boss has been very busy in making the necessary changes to the setup and the personnel at the club. Emery has made five signings already in Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Matteo Guendouzi to beef up the quality of his armoury.
He has spent £70million already in recent weeks and in all fairness, his new acquisitions have the calibre to fix the loopholes which existed during the latter stages of Arsene Wenger’s reign. Although they are yet to prove themselves in the Premier League, a sense of optimism is evident at the Emirates regarding their ability to make an impact on the title race in the coming season.
However, one of the players whose future is apparently in doubt is that of Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey’s contract with the North London based outfit is due to expire at the end of the 2018-19 season and Emery has made it clear that the Welsh international is important to his plans at Arsenal. He is reportedly pleased with the performances of the midfielder in the training sessions and has told the board to finalise the extension of his contract.
Ramsey has been in the books of the Gunners for a decade and is one of the prized assets of the club. Having emerged through the youth ranks of Cardiff City, he was promoted to the senior side of the Bluebirds and his talent was expectedly spotted by Wenger who lured him to his ranks in the summer of 2008. Although injuries have frequently taken a toll on his career, he has been a fantastic servant for the club for the past few years.
Capable of operating as a central defensive midfielder, central midfielder and a central attacking midfielder, Ramsey has the required technique, skills and work-ethic to blossom. He is an excellent reader of the game and last season, he made 24 appearances in the league and garnered 7 goals and 8 assists. Besides, his pass completion rate of 84.9% in the top flight was exemplary.
In May, The Telegraph had reported that the 27-year-old is set to be handed a significant pay rise to his ongoing £110,000-a-week wages as the club is prepared to roll out a new five-year deal to secure his future. This will arguably be Ramsey’s last big contract and owing to the stature he has engineered at Arsenal, the board shouldn’t waste any more time to make him sign on a new deal.
