Tottenham Hotspur could face stiff competition for the services of Andre Gomes, with both Valencia and Lazio joining the race to sign the Barcelona midfielder. According to latest reports from Calciomercato, Lazio have identified Andre Gomes as a potential successor to Sergej Milinkovic Savic, who is highly linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.
Highly regarded as one of the most talented Portuguese midfielders in the current generation, it appears as though Andre Gomes will no longer be a member of Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona squad from next season and it’s very easy to see why. The former Valencia midfielder only managed to start in six La Liga matches, often being overlooked due to the presence of more prominent midfield figures in Andres Iniesta, Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic.
Indeed! Since his move to Barcelona in the summer of 2016, Gomes has had a hard time establishing a regular spot in the starting lineup. Even though he did make as many as 78 appearances for Barca in the past couple of seasons, most of his appearances came as a substitute.
Andre Gomes’ downfall is clearly evident as he wasn’t picked in Portugal’s 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup, despite being instrumental in their European Championship triumph two years ago.
Thus, the Portuguese midfielder is a destined for a move out of Camp Nou this summer and the 24-year-old will have no shortage of potential suitors either with Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, Lazio and Valencia all vying for his services. Spurs, in particular, have been long touted to make a move for Andre Gomes. In fact, the Lilywhites were very close to securing his services in the winter transfer window but a move failed to materialize.
Following a rather satisfying campaign last season, head coach Mauricio Pochettino is keen to secure the services of a few top class players this summer, knowing his current squad doesn’t have much room to improve. Andre Gomes, in that regard, could be an exciting addition for Spurs especially with Mousa Dembele facing a rather uncertain future with the club.
During his time with Valencia, Andre Gomes showed exactly what he is capable of and at the age of 24, he would want to secure regular game time. Thus, a move to Tottenham could prove to be a logical decision not just for the club but for the player himself, as Tottenham can surely offer him the perfect stage to showcase his footballing talents in arguably the best league in the world.
