Premier League champions Manchester City and arch-rivals Manchester United are both interested in the services of Milan Skriniar, according to reports. Both of these two Manchester giants have failed with their £53m bids for the Inter Milan star with the club reluctant to let go of their defensive starlet.
Manchester United, in particular, are eager to secure the services of a world-class defender this summer, following the disappointing performances of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. In fact, both of these two English defenders are linked with moves out of Old Trafford this summer.
Milan Skriniar, on the other hand, is currently regarded as one of the best defenders in Serie A. After making his move from Sampdoria to Inter Milan, in the summer of 2017, the Slovakian international has been transformed into a world-class defender by Luciano Spalletti.
What will Manchester United get out of Skriniar?
Generally regarded as a ball-playing centre-back, Skriniar has immense control of the ball, which makes him a unique component in the defensive department.
Skriniar is an excellent passer, who can not only circulate possession but also infiltrate the passing lanes with his ability. His presence in the defensive backline has already improved Inter’s build-play this season, ultimately helping them secure Champions League qualification for next season.
In addition, Skriniar is also good when it comes to defensive phases. Despite having a slim figure, the 23-year-old is pretty strong. What he lacks in pace and mobility, he makes up for it with some great positioning sense and brilliant movements, making him one of the most intriguing defenders in the Italian top flight.
The addition of the Skriniar will definitely be a boon for a club like Manchester United. Since taking over the reigns from Louis van Gaal, head coach Jose Mourinho has transformed United into a defensively solid team and acquiring the services of someone like Skriniar will only enhance their defensive department next season.
Furthermore, the 23-year-old could prove to be a perfect partner for Eric Bailly in central defence. While Bailly’s more fluid and robust gameplay can make United solid defence, Skriniar’s superior qualities on the ball will make them much more flexible in possession whilst bringing an extra dimension into their gameplay.
However, that being said, it would definitely prove to be tough for Manchester United to sign Skriniar, especially with Inter being adamant on keeping hold of their star defender. It would be interesting to see how his transfer saga goes as we head into the summer transfer window.
