Tottenham Hotspur linked with Premier League shot-stopper: The right backup choice?

It might be time for Mauricio Pochettino to spend on established stars for the first team but he is also keen to improve the depth in the side and is looking at potential stars, who can improve the squad for the next season.

One such player they are keeping tabs on at the moment is Alex McCarthy.

Pochettino Convinced McCarthy Is Good Enough

The English star has put on a solid display for Southampton late last season and has turned into an attractive star for many a club, even as the Saints managed to avoid relegation. He has just a year left on his contract and the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Wolves are all interested in signing him.

Pochettino is impressed with McCarthy’s displays at St Mary’s and is ready to make a bid for his services. So would McCarthy be a good signing for Spurs?

McCarthy And His Past

Having started his senior career with Reading, he spent stints on loan at 8 different English clubs before he managed to cement a place in the first team for the Royals. He was sold to QPR in 2014 and after just a year, was snapped up by Crystal Palace. He failed to make any progress at Selhurst Park and moved to Southampton in the 2016 summer transfer window.

He worked as an understudy to Fraser Foster for the entire previous season and only broke into the first team in the 2017-18 campaign, making his debut in the side under Mauricio Pellegrino. In his time in England, he failed to break into Gareth Southgate’s side but he put on some impressive performances for the Saints and stands as one of the crucial parts of the squad that avoided relegation.

Safe with his handling and adept at making point-blank saves, McCarthy hardly showed any weaknesses in the recent campaign. He is quick to collect crosses, is also happy to take his time with goal kicks and is usually accurate with his passing.

He may not be the best GK around in England but at 28, he will reach his prime as a shot-stopper and is a decent coup for most English sides.

Where Does He Fit In?

French international Hugo Lloris remains the first choice GK for Pochettino in the next season as well. Though there were rumours linking him with an exit, Lloris is expected to stay in London and will be one of the first names on the team sheet for Spurs.

But Pochettino does need a backup for him in the first team as Spurs are set to lose Michel Vorm this summer. The Dutch international will be a free agent in a few days and is not expected to extend his stay at Spurs.

McCarthy can not only replace him in the squad but will actually push Lloris for a place in the first. He has just a year left on his contract and will be cheap and this move makes loads of sense for the Lily Whites.
