With exactly 100 points in a 38-game season, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City created English history this campaign and will remain as one of the best PL teams ever to play in the competition. Having lost just two games all season, the league leaders lifted the title in record time and their return of 106 goals is also the best for a top-flight season.
It has been a year to remember for the Manchester City fans but how does their season rate? Here is a season review of this record-breaking Manchester City side for the 2017-18 league campaign:
3 Players Who Impressed:
Kevin de Bruyne:
With 8 goals and 16 assists to his name, De Bruyne was the best midfielder in the league in the season. He not only created chances but also ran the game at his own will and would have been the Player of the Season if not for Mo Salah of Liverpool.
Raheem Sterling:
In what has turned out to be his most productive top-flight campaign, Sterling registered 18 goals and 11 assists and also scored more winners than any other player at Etihad this season. He has matured as a player, is perfect for Pep’s system and is sure to break records next season as well.
Nicolas Otamendi:
Regarded as the weak link in the City side at the start of the season, the Argentine ace stepped up his game at the crucial time and was easily the best and the most consistent defender in the league this season. He also has four goals to his name and was crucial to City’s record-breaking run to the top of the table.
3 Players Who Disappointed (stretching it to the limit):
John Stones:
A player who fits in Guardiola’s system perfectly, Stones showed no confidence in the 18 league games that he got and is no longer the first choice CB for the manager.
Ilkay Gundogan:
The German midfielder was expected to walk into the first team and have an immediate impact but he was only used as a sub and did not do enough in his 30 league games to cement his place in the first team.
Vincent Kompany:
The Belgian beast was supposed to be the first choice partner for Otamendi but his constant injuries and lack of form could have easily cost City a few points in the run into the title.
Season Rating:
While Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season was a historic one, Pep’s 100-point campaign is a step better. It is harder to win games than to not lose and the Spanish maestro seems to have mastered the PL in just his second season.
They do have a strong squad but to break as many records as City have broken this season, this is probably the perfect PL campaign for any team.
Rating – 10/10
