Manchester City linked with Brazilian superstar: Do they really need him?

Manchester City may have won the Premier League title, breaking records on their way, in the recently concluded season but Pep Guardiola is not totally convinced with his squad and is ready to spend big yet again. This has seen Manchester City linked with a number of superstars for a move this summer and one name now doing the rounds is Neymar Jr.

Neymar Open To Working With Pep Guardiola

Having joined PSG in a world record deal just last summer, the Brazilian international has constantly been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Manchester City might now enter the race. The former Barcelona star, who missed out on working with the Spaniard at Camp Nou, previously stated that he admires Guardiola and took it a step further earlier this week.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Neymar revealed that he always wanted to work with Guardiola, who left Barcelona a year before Neymar joined the club. “I’d love to work with him,” he said in an interview. So is he an option Pep should pursue this summer?

Where Will He Fit In?

The Sky Blues won the domestic league in England in style and Belgian ace Kevin de Bruyne stood as one of the best players, not just for the team, but also in Europe. He and David Silva added a different dimension to the midfield, that allowed Pep’s plan to work well.

Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling did well to add width to the attack and their goalscoring form meant that Manchester City turned into a high scoring side this season. To add to it, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus continued to impress, making City a formidable side. But they do not have any depth for the roles on the wing and this is where Neymar fits in well.

With an astonishing goal scoring record in Spain and in France, Neymar is easily one of the best playmakers in the game at the moment and will fit into Pep’s style well. His arrival will allow Sane and Sterling to take turns on the right wing, with Bernardo Silva adding some depth.

His creativity and guile will take City to the next level and will certainly make them the strongest team in Europe.

But Does This Move Make Sense?

While City does have the financial power to spend on Neymar, this move hardly makes any sense. While PSG are set to unleash Thomas Tuchel next season, the 26-year old is expected to be the leader under the former Bundesliga coach and could turn into a world beater.

His side in France will be set up around him, which will not be the case at Etihad. Pep likes world class players, but not ones who want to be the best at the club. He needs players who work for each other and Neymar’s arrival might dampen it.

The former Barcelona man was not afraid to get rid of big names likes Ronaldinho, Yaya Toure and even Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to make his system work at Camp Nou and it does not make sense for him to spend on a player who might not blend in well with the squad.
